History of the Tamanend Park Herb Gardening
Club
The Tamanend Park Herb Gardening Club was started in the Summer of
1983 by four residents of Upper Southampton who were interested in
the various aspects of herb gardening and herb use. They were given
approval to start a specimen garden by the Upper Southampton Board
of Supervisors and the Park & Recreation Board, and they
implemented a design created by a local stained glass artist.
In 1984 the first herb sale was held and the profits went to enlarging the garden, buying more plants, and supporting the herb club's programs. The club has grown since then and is active in many areas that involve herbs.
Come Learn About Herbs
The Tamanend Park Herb Gardening Club meets the third Wednesday of
each month, from January through November:
The club has a wide variety of speakers that cover many different topics. Pat's presentations have included:
Herb Study Group
There is usually a short herb study that runs from 7:00PM to
7:30PM, before the actual meeting, where participants focus on on
eparticular herb. The group shares knowledge and ideas by
discussing herb lore, cultivation and recipes.
Annual Herb Sale
Each year the members of the Tamanend Park Herb Gardening Club
pull together to organize the annual herb sale. It is always held
the third weekend in May, on both Saturday and Sunday at the
Farmhouse.
The Teaching Garden
The club maintains a teaching garden in the park, next to the
Farmhouse, that features various specimen plants in various
categories: medicinal, culinary, silver, fragance, and dyer's herbs
- as well as mints and teas, lliums, and oriental herbs. If you
have or want to learn more about growing herbs try volunteering.
Herb volunteers are needed 6:30PM every Wednesday night, April
through October, for weeding, mulching, and general maintenance.
Someone from the club is usually there every Wednesday evening and
can talk with you about cultivating and enjoying herbs.
