History

Since its start in 1921, the Southampton Free Library has relied on volunteers to maintain its very existence. Many people over the years have written newspaper articles, stories for the Southampton Days Booklet, etc. to document the activities of the library. In 2001, the Library Board commissioned an ad hoc committee to research the library archives and document a history for future generations. For many years, this web page used a "Brief History of the Library" written by Ruth Miller and first published in 1989 in the Southampton Days yearly booklet. This "brief history" served as the backbone of the research which included person interviews, minutes from the old Library Association, newspaper clippings, and library minutes since 1969. The Library Board is indebted to Rene Kaiser for her dedication in researching the history of the library and for writing the first draft and to Bunny Riehl for researching the ordinance that established the library as a township agency.
